I had to pick up a few things for my Matilda Jane trunk show this weekend. Luckily, I have some helpers. My Achilles *only* got rammed 3 times by Jack and once by Lauren. They don’t quite understand “safe following distance” yet. Lucky me!

Lauren’s school program
Today, was Lauren’s school program. Unfortunately, Kevin had to miss it since he is out of town all week (in San Francisco.) That presented a huge challenge for me. I had to figure out something to do with Jack and then get there early enough to get a decent seat. So, Jack had to go to early care at school (he usually goes to pre-school at 9, but had to go at 8 today.) Then, I raced over to the school only to find out that the time they stated on the information sheet was not in fact the time they were going to open the doors (what?) So, we stood around and waited until someone finally got fed up and just decided it was time (so of course, everyone followed suit.) By that time, other people had got into the gym (somehow) and all of the front 2 rows were taken. Such is life, I guess. I brought my long lens so that helped.
It was a very cute program. Lauren’s facial expressions aren’t to be missed.

Oh my hair!
Mission: Hockey hair-75% complete
Earlier this week in my solo parenting I really needed Phil. The van wouldn’t start, my phone wouldn’t work to call a co-worker, I had a babysitter over for the kids (who doesn’t have her own car) and I needed to get to school to teach in 5 minutes. He was able to give me a ride and charge up the battery to get me by. Today, it was my turn to repay him. He needed someone to watch the kids while he did a major repair on his vehicle. So the Larson kids came over and played with Jack for a few hours this morning. Fun was had by all.

The LEGO movie
Today, I took the kids to see the Lego movie while Kevin got to board a plane to San Francisco for a week. At least the movie was AWESOME! Both kids really enjoyed it and we sang the theme song for the rest of the day.

ZOMG! The snow…..
Thank goodness they city crew came and removed the giant pile in front of our house yesterday, because it’s back now with a vengeance. I had to build stairs into the pile so the kids could get to the top and slide down. UGh! I’m thinking Northern Florida today.

More snow *yay*
I’m smiling, but I’m not happy. This winter sucks and I’m ready to move…seriously! Texas sounds better and better every day.
At least there is a cute snowman.

A KEYC field trip
Lauren’s class has been studying weather and with the connections of one of the students (whose father works for KEYC) they were able to secure a field trip to the weather center and watch a midday newscast being filmed live. When I got the email asking for two chaperones, I literally jumped at the opportunity. Coming from radio and knowing what it’s like “behind the curtain,” I was extremely excited to see how the news works as well. Truth be told, I’ve always been fascinated by it, and probably should have went into mass comm (but hey, I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up!) So, the day finally came (after a weather cancellation) and we walked over to KEYC for the grand tour.
Here they are in front of the green screen. You can see the tv monitors on the side so that the meteorologist knows where to point at their graphics on the screen.
Here is what you see when they are standing in front of the green screen. Luckily nobody was wearing green (or the graphic would have shown up and they would be transparent.)
Here is Jack, the meteorologist in the “weather center.” I was shocked at just how close the weather center is to the anchor desk. It kind of makes “Lets take it over to Jack in the weather center” and “back to you in the newsroom” a bit of a joke. It was also interesting to see some of the remnants of yester-year there. I’m not sure how long they’ve been in their current studio, but I think it’s quite awhile by the looks of things. I should have taken pictures of some of the stuff. You can see one of the antique looking speakers on the wall up high in this one.
Here is a great example of the green screen. A couple of the kids had green on their jackets and you can see the image projected onto their bodies where the green stripes and arms are. Quite a neat effect! Overall, it was a very fun field trip and I’m completely jealous of the news anchor, it looks to be a very fun job.

What a skier!
I’m so proud of Lauren’s progress this year. Last year she was bombing the hill with minimal control (which is ok for Mt. Kato, she ran into problems on Spirit Mt thought.) This year, she is amazing! She is great at making nice wide turns and keeping it under control. Today, after her lesson, I skied with her for a few hours and it was a lot of fun. We got to ski with her friend Harper (and her big sister and mama as well.) I have some super cute videos of them having a great time together (and one of them crashing into each other, which was just a little humorous.) I think we’re going to have a little skier on our hands and I couldn’t be more thrilled for the fun trips we can take in the future.

Happy Valentines Day
I took this pic at Lauren’s Valentine’s day party today. I was thoroughly entertained reading all of them.
Heart shaped pizza, yum! It is what’s for dinner.
Jack enjoyed his first Valentine’s day party at pre-school today. He may have come home with a couple of new girlfriends as well.

My little skiier
Here is Lauren modeling her new goggles. She wanted pink and they happened to have them in the ski shop at Mt. Kato.
Cookie time
My mom had requested that I make and decorate some cookies with her “chicken/rooster” cutter. I say it’s not a chicken but more of a duck as all of the rooster cookies I checked out online (for inspiration) had ruffled feathers. Oh well, who am I to argue. They’re not my best work, but it was the end of the night and I’d had enough. At least the valentine’s day cookies are cute!

80’s day
I received an email yesterday saying that today for the 400 club (reading incentive program) the kids could dress from their favorite decade. I immediately had visions of poodle skirts, bobby socks, saddle shoes and a super high pony tail with a scarf in it. Unfortunately, with LESS THAN 24 hrs notice, that isn’t a look that *even I* am capable of making happen. I stress the even I as I’ve been known to make things show up from thin air. It wasn’t for lack of trying, but unfortunately, my sewing skills just weren’t to be trusted with this one. So, enter the 80’s. Super easy peasy!! Everything out there today already looks like it’s from the 80’s anyway, it just needs a little accessorizing and the right hairstyle. VOILA!
Honestly, the crimped hair totally MAKES the outfit. I think we should bring the side pony and the crimper back Lauren. You and me girlie, we can make it happen!

Oh Brother
Lauren decided to build “Hogwarts” out of Jack’s alphabet blocks and his Daniel Bryan wrestling figure is apparently a gargoyle on the top. Yes Yes Yes, I’m not even joking.
